Job overview

The role of the post will be to provide medical input to the Paediatric Unit to enable the efficient and effective
assessment and initial management of all cases. The post holder will also support the Physicians who run
these units.
The ST4 LAS doctor will have day to day responsibility for patients under the care of Consultants. A
Consultant led post-take ward round will take place after each take-in day and one full medical ward round
per week. The department of medicine has recently introduced a ward based system for both junior doctors
and consultants.
The ST4 LAS will take part in the teaching of junior medical staff and medical students (Yeovil Academy), coordinating this activity carefully with the Consultants. The comprehensive teaching programme includes
journal reviews, topic teaching and X-ray tutorials. MRCP teaching routes are held regularly. Excellent library
facilities are available.

Main duties of the job

This is a non-training post and therefore not recognised for training by the Royal College of Physicians.
 To participate in audits and current research projects. These are available through individual
 To attend the active postgraduate programme with weekly lectures, radiology, medical and
pathology meetings and medical unit presentations.
 To contribute to the active journal club. There are ‘bleep-free’ obligatory sessions for teaching and
these are part of the weekly timetable.
 To participate in the teaching of Foundation Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students.
 To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital.
 To perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the
appropriate Consultant in conjunction, where practicable, with their colleagues both senior and
 To attend other hospitals within the Trust if so requested by the supervising Consultant.

area are quite reasonable. Rural properties in many of the pretty villages in South Somerset and North Dorset
are within easy commute to the hospital. Many properties have land or large gardens attached. There is also
a nearby abbey town of Sherborne, which is 6 miles away. There are world class schools based nearby.
It is easy to explore the beautiful South-West of England from Yeovil. Devon and Cornwall, Bath and Bristol
are all within reach. Its 30 minutes to the South Coast, and the Dorset Beaches. Further afield, you can be at
London Paddington in 2 hours by train. We are also very close to Glastonbury which hosts the annual
Glastonbury Festival

Work Schedules
This post is on the new 2016 terms and conditions so you will be issued with a work schedule. This will
detail your rota, hours of work, annual pay and any additional enhancements.

Clinical Governance
Meetings are held monthly. Audit projects, morbidity & mortality, critical incidents, other clinical governance
topics and departmental matters are discussed. The department has a PC, printer and scanner which are
available for all in the department to use. The hospital audit office assists with audit work and there is a well resourced postgraduate library

Conditions of Service
The appointee will be required to maintain General Medical Council (GMC) full registration with a licence to
practice and revalidation and should follow the GMC’s Code of Good Medical Practice

The successful applicant will be employed for the first rotation, under the Terms and Conditions for Medical
and Dental Staff (England) 2002 and will receive a salary and incremental increases as detailed in the National
NHS Pay Circular for Medical and Dental Staff
(Please note that for the second rotation to Southland Hospital registration with the New Zealand Medical
Council will be required, this will be detailed within their job description)

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • ALS / ACLS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Studying towards Part I MRCPCH
  • Additional degree or equivalent


Essential criteria
  • Completed Foundation Year 1 level in the UK or equivalent
  • Completed Foundation Year 2 level in the UK or equivalent
  • Completed ST1 and ST2 specialty training level or equivalent
  • Evidence of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS or experience of NHS working practices and systems.
